A fun part of my PhD is reading romances. Mostly I’m concentrating on retros–1970s and 1980s but I want to read up to and including current titles.

The President of the Australian Romance Readers Association (ARRA), Debbie Phillips, gave me four boxes of books. These were mostly Harlequin Silhouette novels from the late 1980s and early 1990s. I’ve read two so far.

And then I didn’t have the heart to put them back in the box so I bought some bookshelves for them. (I’m not supposed to be doing that being frugal. Alas, the savings were attacked!)

I’ve read one cowboy romance by Lass Small called No Trespassers Allowed and I enjoyed that a lot. I even sniffled a bit at the end. It wasn’t feminist but it did discuss gender roles and was almost entirely told from the male perspective. I noticed I have about 5 more of Lass Small’s titles. She’s deceased now but published a lot in her life time.

Cherokee Thunder by Rachel Lee was published in 1992/93 and is from the Silhouette Jasmine imprint. It appears to be slightly longer than the traditional category romance. I’m sure someone can tell me all about that line. I’ve not read Rachel Lee or heard of her before. A quick look on line tells me she is still writing and is using the same setting, Conard County. And she’s won awards etc. I’m not surprised.

For someone reading with an eye for feminist or social issues in these book like I am, there was heaps in this book to interest me. It’s main theme is domestic violence and the secondary theme is racism. There was also some discussion about being a working woman, being independent, being a wife and mother and liking housework. The kind of book this is-set in a small county in Wyoming- being a house wife is a natural aspiration.

I’m not sure how politically correct the half-Cherokee character/heroe, Micah Parish, is but I found him to be represented in a very positive way.This is a character who is solitary, cut off from family, both his white and his First Nation side. He is honorable and emotionally amoured and very gentle.  I ‘heart’ him very much.

Faith, the heroine is a battered wife. She’s not ordinary, run of the mill, battered wife either. She’s seriously battered, stabbed, brutalised…you name it and her ex husband is a crim and an ex cop and a psycho!. Six months pregnant and her ex has even tried to carve the baby out of her. Seriously, scary, stuff!

She’s the frightened kitten, small, petite and hurting. Micah is a big man and he’s got a soft spot for strays. She may be battered but with his caring way, she’s able to find her spirit and over come her timidity. Never though is her abuse trivialised. It is discussed throughout that she’ll have flashbacks (she does) and that it will take time to heal.

As I read this I could see that there could be other stories in this setting. There were some interesting male characters but I haven’t looked up to see if this was a first or a third in a series.

Faith in her reminiscence about life reflects that she’s been betrayed. She was brought up to be a wife and mother and all she got was  abuse. Her stepfather had conditioned her to have low self esteem and told her she deserved a beating. The representation of the abused woman in this story was very accurate to my mind. It takes someone very special to help her. And man does Micah do that.  As I read this I was thinking this is really good. This would make a great movie.

The story seemed to me to be predominantly from the male point of view, except it wasn’t. It was a shared point of view, slipping between Micah and Faith within scenes. It was smoothly done. The only other time I’ve seen this style was in Cory Daniels The Last T’en. It is certainly different from the pseudo omnicient/weird quasi from the male perspective that some of the other retro Mills & Boon had. (apparently before the 1980s they couldn’t use the male PoV)

What I loved about this book (and being a victim of abuse myself) is that it’s so positive. The message here is that there not all men are the same. That even a big, hard man can be tender and kind. It’s such a powerful message. I know Micah is a constructed male. A hero drawn from a woman’s imagination. But I can’t understand how something like this can be denigrated, the way romance fiction, is generally denigrated. It’s a healing story. So there are so romantic foibles-some things the hero says a man probably never would, but still…

I recall JD Robb’s In death series and I remember being so impressed that (Nora Roberts) discussed child abuse in the story line. The unspeakable trauma that the main character, Eve Dallas, went through as a child is revealed slowly over the series and I was so heartened that she discussed that topic. It’s not a nice topic but it happens and it’s important.

I’m still at the beginning on my retro reading. It’s been an interesting and enjoyable experience so far.

Cherokee Thunder was a touching tale. Thank you Rachel Lee for the lovely piece of fiction.

Last week I worked out that I was being too intense and trying too hard and that I’d burn out. Today after a four day weekend, I’m feeling relaxed but alert.

Today’s chore is to review all the research proposal material to submit it for ethics approval. The ethics approval process is very long. I would have given up on it I think if not for my supervisor Tony knowing what was to go where. Thanks Tony! I want to ask some romance readers and writers questions but I have to do the same process as if I was going to take tissue samples from them and combine their DNA with animals. Sigh!

But now that it is close to being done, I’m feeling quite good about it all. I would like a year of researching books and academic articles before formulating my questions but alas I have to think them up now. At present I’m hunting for some definitions of strong, female heroine in relation to popular romance. If you see one please give me a hoy! I’ll need this to do my introductory seminar but it would also be useful for the questionnaires.

When I’ve tidied up the above papers…quite a few of them, I need to start working on a paper to be included in a conference. I don’t get to present this paper as there are too many other people wanting too and well I’m just starting out so I’m at the bottom end of the pecking order. It is fantastic though that there is so much romance scholarship that there is an oversupply of presenters. However, I can write the paper so it can be peer reviewed etc. I wrote an extract in February. Now I have to get my head back into that space and write the bloody paper.

Meanwhile reading lots of articles etc which make ideas percolate all the time and sends my mind into hyperspace and back again so rapidly I spin on the spot.

I’m just over two months into this PhD and I’m gaining a few perspectives into the world, as you do, and myself too.

Yesterday I read an article by Angela McRobbie and it made me think in new ways about the world and what we do to each other. This is the title of the article:

Notes on ‘What Not To Wear’ and post-feminist symbolic violence, Angela McRobbie, The Editorial Board of the Sociological Review, 2004, Vol 52, supplementary issue. (McRobbie, 2004)

It’s not the first article that got me thinking either or feeing emotional or just mind blown. Yet it was the first time I felt that I could do the methodological analysis required. Something slipped into place. McRobbie uses Bourdieu’s cultural capital to assess the changes in TV and the way females exist in this day and age. I need to understand Bourdieu and apply his framework to my own work. Now I think that’s possible. This article only came up when I googled Bourdieu and Popular Culture. It hadn’t stumbled upon it elsewhere.

The other realization I had this week was about pacing myself. I’m an intensely focused over achiever, well I tend in that direction. I can’t do that every day. I just can’t. Not for the next three years. I realized that I had to try and moderate myself. PhDs are self-directed and unstructured. You have a supervisor to provide advice and some direction, but basically it’s up to you to get the work done. For me that means trying to get it all done in a month, maybe two with constant reminders that I have three years. Three years doesn’t seem long enough sometimes. I’m enjoying it. But I don’t want to over do it and end up not enjoying it.

So the hardest lesson will be striking a balance of too much and too little and let myself breathe a bit.

Going to uni most of the week is really helpful. I thought it wouldn’t be but I find I come here and work and I’m not tempted to do housework. It will surprise you to know that I haven’t cleaned the house since I started this. My partner, Matthew, thought I’d go on a cleaning frenzy but I’m just too exhausted when I get home to do that. I’m even cooking less. Some chronic pain issues aren’t helping there either.

Guilt about attending the Jane Austen Festival over the weekend and Thursday and Friday, has lessened now that I come to this realization. I must pace myself. A little bit crammed in each day, is better than shoving heaps of info into my head and then having a brain explosion.

Balancing out the technical with reading retro Mills & Boon is helping too. That doesn’t feel like work at all. Filling out my spreadsheet is work though!

I feel naughty! I’ve put a book up on Amazon for pre-order (other retailers to come). I feel nervous, excited and liberated too.

It’s been an interesting experience, one of commitment and camaraderie. I had to commit to working on the whole series this year. I had to pay for an edit and a cover. Anything to do with spending money when I’m now retired is a BIG commitment. Then there has been the camaraderie, the network of writer friends who have or who are embarking on Indie publishing. So much assistance and advice freely given. It’s been wonderful. Thank you all.

The cover does have a YA feel but that’s deliberate because it does have YA leanings for sure. Fish out of water, coming of age etc. It’s also about romance, though I’m told it’s not fantasy romance. This is mainly because there are three different relationships. I can’t spoil it though! After fifteen years, it’s amazing to see it out there. Only me and maybe a couple of old friends knew the early version– the rank beginner Donna. It wasn’t my first novel ever. I’ve not had that much commitment to Relic (SF romance, Feminist SF) my first novel attempt, which I haven’t given up on completely. (I was just advised to wait until I was a better writer as it was a worthy project). Argenterra was my first fantasy ever. My first Indie published book.

Now for the outtakes….Sophy and Aria. Their names used to be Sapphire and Misty. However, while on a Writers’ Retreat, my very first, Russell Kirkpatrick and Paul Ewins said those names sounded like unicorn names. It was funny at the time but I did change the name. I always had trouble with Sapphire as a name. People found it odd. I couldn’t understand that because I knew a Sapphire. So Sophy and Aria it is.

I get so annoyed at myself. I have these great ideas for blog posts and then it’s so hard to get to the computer and all those wonderful ideas leak out of my head. Pfft! Gone.

Originally I thought I’d be writing a post a day on the PhD and wouldn’t that be fun. But hey, the PhD makes me busier than I was before so no way. I could write a post a day on the PhD but then you’d all explode in flames!

The Phd research (feminism in popular romance fiction ) so interesting in almost all aspects. The difficult part is settling in to a new place, new regime and a new focus. I’m loving the reading, the mind expanding study of feminism and philosophy (for the methodology), the ideas for my creative work and the reading of romances. I wish I could fit much more into my day. It’s addictive. The physical body and mind though has to have a break. I can assure you I’m pretty good at taking breaks.

I took a week off to go to Contact in Brisbane over Easter. I was even on a panel or two, I had a table for hats for a day, sold a few and hung out with people. Met new people too. The Hotel Jen in Brisbane was amazing. I ate at the hotel because the menu and prices were so good. The room was lovely and the service good. The Contact program was well designed. The downside was that not that many people came. Not as many as you’d expect to a national convention. For that I feel bad for the Brisbane organisers. They deserved better support.

My good friend, Glenda Larke, asked me to give her acceptance speech if she won an award. Well she did! She won the inaugural Sara Douglass award for a series. Here’s the trophy. I nearly cried I was so happy for her.

Now I’m back at Uni and working pretty hard. In fact, I’m on lunch break, getting ready to attend a workshop on being a better PhD researcher! This makes me laugh, but I’m doing it anyway.

In other news, I’m publishing a book. Argenterra, Silverlands book 1. It’s a story I’ve worked on since about six months after I started writing. This book has been with me to Envision in Brisbane back in 2003. I was planning to throw it in the bin, but my tutor Louise Cusack said not to do that. It’s grown so much since then as I have as a writer so it holds a special place in my heart. It’s the first fantasy I wrote. It’s light and bright but had some darkness there too. I’m doing the Indie publishing thing. So I’ve had a cover done by the brilliant Les Petersen, an edit done and a great proof too. It will soon be ready to go. Just need to get the blurb right. Lucky, there are great writer friends out there who help. So stay tuned. The ebook will be out by the end of the month with POD for June and Supanova in Sydney!

On a more personal note, it’s odd but the busier I am the more productive I tend to be. I’ve been suffering a bit with the spine, but I’ve been taking the meds and today I’m feeling the best I have in two weeks. Yay! Yesterday, in a bid to keep fit and take a break during the day, I walked down the road to the pool, where I walked in the water for half an hour and came back. It was such a lovely day that I was happy and content.

Recently I’ve been delving into retro Mill & Boon romances to sample what there is and what might be of interest in my PhD research into Feminism in Popular romance. It is an interesting time because feminism is being debated and discussed in social media too. There are many schools of thought with regard to feminism that include diverse opinions and finding your way through them can be difficult. As a human being I consider myself equal to others, although I have to admit that I have not always been treated as such.
After listening to Caitlyn Moran’s How to be a woman, I can definitely agree with the respect principle. Treat everyone with respect as if they were yourself or your best friend or your mate. As a woman that’s what I’m interested in being respected as a person, regardless of my gender or colour or religion. Although I wave my hand to say I am a white privileged female, although not always privileged.
As a person/woman I want to be recognised for my abilities. Not patronised, not given excuses as to why I might be overlooked. I certainly had that tripe thrown at me in the 1980s. “I’m sorry, Donna, we only promote men. Women get married, have babies and leave.”
I noted this from Highland Gathering by Elizabeth Graham, Mills & Boon from 1983 (p 8-9).
The heroine’s father, hotel tycoon, says this to his daughter who works with him in the business.
“James McKay’s mouth pursed drily. ‘You know you’re competent to do that, and I know you’re competent to do that, but the Mazzini Brothers would never believe in a thousand years that a woman is level headed enough to find her way out of the kitchen or-um-the bedroom.’ He shrugged “It would offend them if I sent you, and I really don’t want to do that as this time.’”
Looking back at this work and this time, I recall this embedded attitude to women. I found this book struck a nerve with me. It made me angry. Not for this point above. That was the interesting part because hey popular romance novels did discuss feminist issues!
Since I’ve started my preliminary reading I have found I write more notes about the books that upset me the most. This particular book was interesting. For about a day I mulled over it and then I got it. The inexplicable behaviour of the male and female leads made sense. She was standing up for herself by demanding respect, recognition and romance (love actually) and he was being a typical male of the time, trying to order her about, expecting her to unpack his clothes (wifely duties), trying to take control of the business she was running. This made me hate the male character who had been a promising romantic lead. But then I got it. She was having the man, the relationship on the terms she wanted. Bravo!

I checked out Smart Bitches Trashy Books podcast because I’m in between ebooks. I’ve been catching up with a lot of blog casts lately! I caught up on a whole year of Champagne and Socks-easy because they are short (about ten minutes) and Alisa missed a number due to health issues (not nice but it did make catching up easy).

So I listened to a pod cast with Amanda (also from Smart Bitches) and it was about Amanda’s sex life. You know that thing people have and her being younger and using Tinder was really very interesting. Sarah’s contrast with what is actually happening with young women (admittedly not all, but some) and what is in a romance novel was a case in point. The majority of romance readers don’t like female leads that sleep around and definitely not while dating the hero. It is also frowned upon for a man to sleep around once romancing the female hero.

This got me thinking-why is this so? My own reaction is similar to those ‘readers of romance’ and why do I feel that way?  I guess for me I’m a result of my culture and upbringing. I am formed by early religious teachings-I was brought up a catholic with Presbyterian and Baptist influences. Although I’m not religious at all now not for many, many years, the influence remains.  I was also growing up in a time when woman’s role was very traditional- man and home focussed. The girls older than me got birthday and Christmas gifts for their glory box. I remember someone explaining that a glory box was the Manchester you took with you when you got married. So girls at 15 and older would get sheets, crockery, towels and household stuff to put away for when they got married.  Then women’s lib and Bob’s your uncle. World changed.

There was also a very strong focus on virginity, and if you lost that well you lost something of value and that was be shared with the ‘one’. I know it’s an old story right. I know that stuffed me up mentally for many years. That’s another story.

What this amounts to is that I’m conditioned to feel a particular way. I recognise that. Separating the conditioning from how I actually feel is hard. If young girls are equal to men then they should be able to initiate sex, have sex without commitment just like men have always done. Here, here…that’s just right. Why does it make me quake at the thought?

Sarah raised a question in the podcast—what then becomes special about the person you are with in a romantic sense? What makes them special if you have slept with so many partners? This raises questions for me too, like is sex now transactional if removed from emotion, connection and commitment? Are these questions pre- programmed into me? It’s scary. You really should listen to the podcast (link below).

Generally, I have no problem how people want to conduct their sex lives. I am happy for people to be free as long as they don’t hurt others. They have a freedom I don’t. I’m a serial monogamist. That’s the way I am. Basically, I’m too old to change that . However, this podcast certainly gave me insight into my daughters and the world they are living in, what they face day to day.

So I thoroughly recommend this podcast for romance readers and those of you who are mothers and want some insight into their reality.

The second podcast I listened to was from Nerdette and it was an interview with Caitlin Moran, whom I have never heard of previously but who is absolutely fascinating. Her interview looks at feminism and popular culture and how strong pop culture is in getting the message out there. I liked Moran’s Feminist self-assessment test.

Put your hand in your pants. Do you have a vagina? Yes, do you want to control it? Then you’re a feminist.

She also has a tea towel with the five rules of feminism. 1. Women are equal to men. 2. Don’t be a dick. 3. That’s all.

Moran mentions a fifth wave of feminism and I’m like what happened to the fourth wave? And I’m trying to get to grips with the third wave. Yet, I like her simplistic attitude. No dictating what people should wear, what their opinions must be, just cool. I’m with that.

Star Pirate’s Justice is your new SF romance novel out with Escape Publishing. Can you tell us a bit about it?

 

Set in Earth’s future, Star Pirate’s Justice is the second single title story about a group of women who volunteered to terra form a new earth only to find themselves ‘sold’ into ‘slavery’ in an alien world. Only the traders who sold them know the way back to Earth. And to make their lives more difficult there is a war going on for control of an amazing energy source which can not only be used to power intergalactic space travel but can be harnessed to form space/time travel vortexes. (I can hear my youngest son who studies physics yelling at me right about now!)

In this story, Carly is on a mission to find a Darkon warrior turned star pirate and return him to Darkos to face justice. She also believes the star pirate has gate way maps in his possession. But she arrests him at the moment when he is about to make a deal with a smuggler which will give him the evidence he needs to clear his name and reveal the identity of the true traitor. There’s space battles, bounty hunters and a ‘gun’ fight in a market place so this story has more ‘action’ than Legend Beyond the Stars.

Tell us about yourself.

I live in the Hunter Valley of NSW with my three adult children and two dogs and have recently added a rescue cat to our family. I was raised as a Novacastrian then spent quite a few years travelling, mainly around outback Australia. Like many, I’ve been writing off and on for like, forever, however have only taken my ‘muse’ seriously since 2008. My first publication was an erotic, post-apocalyptic short story, Paying the Forfeit, in the Hot Down Under series with Momentum Books on 1st Dec 2012. My next publication was with Escape Publishing, who released my single title and the first book in my sci fi romance series, Legend Beyond the Stars on 10th Jan 2013. Since then I’ve had two novellas published with Escape (also in the same series) and have indie published, two erotic historical/fantasy novellas, one erotic, post-apocalyptic novella and one sweet rural romance short novel. And now of course, Star Pirate’s Justice is out with Escape since 1st Feb 2014.

Tell us a bit about why you write SF romance?

I love it. I love the scope it provides, the ability to make up your own world with its own culture and laws. I love how it gives the opportunity to combine adventure action and romance all in the one package. I also love how a writer can explore controversial subjects, such as: climate change, cloning, genetic dna modelling etc. Plus I cant help myself where alpha warrior type heroes are concerned.

Star Pirate’s Justice is part of an epic saga. Are we going to see more of it in the future?

Definitely. The next single title (fingers crossed) may be out later this year, When Stars Collide. I also have another two novellas in the works (one is Elise’s story and the other introduces some new characters) and the first single title book in the follow on series when some of the women return to Earth, Beyond Aquarius, is also almost completed. Actually, Paying the Forfeit and Storm of Fire are set in this ‘new’ world.

What are you working on at the moment?

Two stories in my sci fi series (as per above) and another rural romance.

What is your writing process? (planner, panster, write every day, write sporadically, writers block etc).

I start with an idea, usually a situation or an event for example for Star Pirate’s Justice my idea was the search for the gate way maps to Earth and a traitor who has been framed. From there my characters evolve, still very much shadowy creatures in my mind. I usually write up to three to five chapters before I sit down and do a story outline and do a fairly indepth study on the characters’ world. I also do a lot of character background / history writing and sometimes I can get new ideas from working on their past that I add into the story. Working on their backstories also helps me with writers block. I would love to say I’m so disciplined I write every day but I’d be lying! I have a full time job and sometimes there is like zero creativity in me some nights. Any leave days and the weekends I try to squeeze in as many writing hours as I can manage.

What do you prefer drafting the story or revising and reworking?

Drafting the story is the bomb for me. I do a lot of revising and re-writing as I go so my first draft is usually fairly ‘clean’. Its a slower process but it works for me.

What part of writing do you find the hardest?

I would have to say writing the love / sex scenes in a fresh way. Sometimes I say ‘insert love scene in .X’s POV say 250 words’ and come back to it later.

What do you plan to work on next?

I have a list. (I know, so anal but I just love spreadsheets) So, after the stories referred to above, I’ve got a New Adult sci fi / futuristic novel I’m also keen to get out there and another fantasy erotic novella in my Bound series.

I’m very excited to bring you and interview with Anna Cowan, author of the amazing book,  Untamed, a Regency romance like no other. I was thoroughly mesmerised by this story. It was so different from what I am used to and yet it won me over.

Anna tell us a bit about yourself

I’ve been writing since I was about 8 (I still have the A3 scrap books full of overblown, emotional adventure stories) (not much has changed LOL). Last year my debut novel Untamed was published by Penguin Australia – and four days later I gave birth to a daughter! I live in Melbourne with my husband and daughter in a beautiful house. I’m slowly slowly getting better at gardening.

What was your path to publication with Untamed? I understand you had a mentorship with Valerie Parv. How did that work?

I’d been writing seriously for about six months before I finally allowed myself to think I could write romance – it honestly hadn’t occurred to me, even though I was a voracious reader of the genre. I had a full draft of Untamed when I won the mentorship with Valerie Parv. It was an incredible year that transformed that naive first draft. I’ve written about the experience at some length on my blog.

I sent queries out to agents at about the same time and had at least 11 rejections! I made a Rejections Book where I recorded all my thoughts and feelings about each one, which helped me see them as professional milestones. I coincidentally met Sarah Fairhall, one of Destiny Romance’s publishers, early in 2012, so when I had a draft of Untamed I was happy with I sent it to her. I thought she might at least feel obliged to give me some feedback on the MS – and was blown away when she called a couple of days later to offer me a contract!

 Untamed? How did that story evolve for you? Or was it a progression? Would you say the characters remained the same (Kit and Duke of Darlington) and that the story changed around them or vice versa?

The first draft of Untamed was titled The Three Loves of Miss Beatrice Sutherland – and it was a very different book. For one thing there was at least three books’ worth of plot fighting for space, and for another my heroine Kit (then Beatrice) was a passive-aggressive doormat. Anyone who’s read Untamed will know that she has evolved lightyears from that beginning! Darlington has remained essentially the same, though he was less tortured and more whimsical. The book began evolving when I started digging deeper into Darlington’s dark character and approaching every interaction Kit had by asking, “How would she respond to this person/situation, given that she’s tough enough on the world and herself to put aside whatever she really feels, and do what must be done instead?”

Was the Duke always a cross dressing bisexual?

Yes! The image that sparked Untamed was of a rake in hiding as a woman, lying awake in a room with five sisters, all of whom thought him a woman. (Torture, for a rake.) In that image Darlington was a more typical alpha hero and his costume would have been more awkward/slapstick. But as soon as I started writing him I realised he was the kind of person who wouldn’t think twice about dressing as a woman. It wouldn’t strike him as significant, and it wouldn’t confront his sense of himself. It would just be another way to be really alive. There were times when I was rewriting when I considered taking the cross-dressing out, but I could never bring myself to do it. His whole character sprang from the question: What kind of man would dress as a woman as naturally as breathing – and totally pull it off?

When you first conceived writing a Regency Romance were you going to explore the fringes or were you aiming for a more traditional plot?

One of the reasons I call my first draft naive is because I always felt I was writing a traditional romance. I can only shake my head when I look back at myself now, but I’m pretty sure I was just trying to be Julia Quinn.

 How did you start writing romance ?

As I mentioned above, it took me a while to realise I was allowed to write it. Romance has always appealed to me – my sister and I still have an impressive collection of Dolly Fictions. When I started Untamed I’d been reading adult romance for a year or two, and had really just gone into those first throes of passionate readership. I was starting to take my writing seriously, determined to make a real go of it. I’d written the first draft of a YA urban fantasy, which proved to me that I had the discipline to write an entire novel, but deciding to write romance took my enjoyment and dedication to the next level.

What is your writing process?

I’m not all that good at personal motivation, so I need to have systems in place that help me write. Until the birth of my daughter I was meeting author CS Pacat four days a week to write 10-5. It was an incredibly productive relationship, not only for getting the hours in, but also because we brainstorm really well together and are super familiar with each other’s projects. If I was stuck with a plot/scene problem in the morning we’d often manage to untangle it over our morning coffee leaving me free to keep writing in the afternoon.

My natural method is a bit unfortunate. I tend to write a whole first draft that has way too much plot and underdone characters. I then look at what I have, find the thread of an actual story in there, throw the draft away and write the whole book again. I had thrown out at least 150,000 words of Untamed before I even started the draft that was eventually edited and published! I’ve tried planning more carefully but it doesn’t seem to make a huge amount of difference. I’m trying to come up with a way to work with my natural method and be efficient at the same time.

What do you prefer drafting the story or revising and reworking?

My favourite part is the bit just before I start writing, when an idea has become urgent because it’s THE BEST IDEA OF ALL IDEAS EVER. I love beginning a new book, but it’s always bittersweet because my writing is a clumsy instrument for pinning that great idea down.

 What part of writing do you find hardest?

To be honest, I find all of it difficult a lot of the time. When I get stuck in a scene it’s hard to get going again and easy to procrastinate. When I’m revising I’m daunted by all the parts that need to be gutted and rewritten and patched up. When I’m editing the volume of decision making numbs my brain. But all of it is wonderful, too.

What do you plan to work on next?

I’ve started writing another regency romance between a female debt collector and a charming, naive youngest son. It’s a joy to write new characters in new circumstances, and I think this book will be part of a loosely-connected three-book series. (There’s also a novella idea that’s so wonderful to me I kind of want to write it RIGHT NOW. But the heroine needs to be thoroughly downtrodden in this novel, first.)

I understand you have a baby. How is juggling a baby and writing going?

If you’d asked me that in the first week of the year I would have said, Wonderfully! I hit my 1,500-word targets every day and felt very smug and productive. Then Robin stopped sleeping and I stopped sleeping and those bits of scenes where I get stuck are much more difficult to overcome when sleep-deprived. Every day is an attempt to strike a balance between rest and productivity. I just keep reminding myself that the fact I’m writing at all is a huge victory. And she’s a much cuter distraction than an internetful of kittens.
